Unfortunately, The Cat Lounge does not take in privately owned pets.  Our mission is to aid cats at risk for euthanasia in high-kill environments.  However, we understand that there are unfortunate situations requiring you to re-home your cat.  Though we do not take in cats from the public, we want to provide resources to make your process as smooth as possible.  

One method that has shown to be successful is private re-homing.  This allows you to post your pet online, meet potential new homes, and stay involved in the process. Click the image below these questions to get started .  You are also welcome to reach out for rescue and shelter resources. 

There are legal procedures that any rescue must follow before taking in a stray cat. First and foremost, we urge finders to take the cat to be microchipped for free at any veterinarian clinic or pet store in order to rule out any signs of ownership. 

If the cat does have a microchip, the San Diego Humane Society should be contacted in order to do a proper stray hold, giving the owner a chance to reclaim their pet.

If the cat does not have a microchip, we urge finders to post on social media websites and around their neighborhood to see if there is someone looking for their lost baby!  Actively seeking an owner while holding on to the cat for 7 days satisfies the legal stray hold.

Because of our specific design, we are capable of taking in cats that meet the following criteria:

• Cats/kittens 8 weeks (minimum 2 pounds) and over  (if kittens are underage, we would likely be able to take them when they are 8 weeks old)
• Friendly and social cats (Our environment can be hectic! We are not a good fit for cats  that are slow to warm up or need more socialization)
• Cats must get along with other cats!  We are a free roaming facility so our kitties are with 20+ cats until they get adopted
• Not currently exhibiting any signs of illness or requiring specialized diets/medication

If the cat you are requesting help for fits the description above, please provide:

• Name, gender, and age of cat including picture
• A short bio describing the cats backgrounds, likes, and dislikes (this helps us get to know the cat better and find them the right home)
• Dates of any vaccinations, deworming, defleaing, spay/neuter
• History of any medical care and documents showing treatment/diagnosis
• Medical care still needed (if not yet fixed, microchipped, vaccinated, etc)

Upon receiving this information, we can take into consideration intake of this animal! Intake times depend on adoption rates and spay/neuter availability.  We will confirm receipt of information above and be in contact regarding intake availability.
